We Are Ubuntu Arts Exhibit 2017
April 10, 2017
Ubuntu Arts at Towne Art Gallery April 10-23
The 11th annual exhibit of Ubuntu Arts, "We are Ubuntu: The Youth Speak," will be on display at the Wheelock College Towne Art Gallery from April 10-23, 2017.
Ubuntu Arts is an ongoing initiative of the Juvenile Justice and Youth Advocacy (JJYA) undergraduate program at Wheelock. The projects are inspired by the spirit of Ubuntu; loosely translated from the Bantu languages of Sub Saharan Africa, "Ubuntu" means "I am because you are" (Archbishop Desmond Tutu, 1999).
The Ubuntu Arts project creates opportunities for connection, learning and growth for Greater Boston youth, college students, adult mentors, youth service organizations, and a wide community of viewers and participants. Through the process of creation and exhibition of individual and collaborative youth art, Ubuntu Arts aspires to help youth be part of the solution.
Founded in 2006, this yearly art-making and exhibition project at Wheelock is coordinated and produced by Ann Tobey, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Juvenile Justice and Youth Advocacy. The exhibits are curated from youth artwork that is submitted in response to an international call for youth art and from submissions by each of our eleven collaborating youth programs through the Ubuntu Arts Youth Project.
Senior capstone students in JJYA and groups of community based youth meet over a period of several months to consider the concept of Ubuntu and to conceptualize what the youth would like to express to viewers. Youth develop and express their voices through a variety of artistic media.
Because Ubuntu is about moral kinship and social responsibility, including this concept in the collaborative artmaking process also serves to create a social space in which a sense of interconnectedness prevails. In this process of self-expression and learning by doing, participants build relationships as well as competencies and skills for themselves and their communities. Each artmaking project strives to empower youth to become full participants and valued decision makers.
"We are Ubuntu: The Youth Speak," is on display at the Wheelock College Towne Art Gallery (180 Riverway, below the Wheelock Family Theatre) from April 10-23, 2017. An Opening Reception will be held on Tuesday, April 11 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Questions about the exhibit should be directed to Dr. Ann Tobey at firstname.lastname@example.org.
