SEI Endorsement Course Now Enrolling for Spring
October 10, 2017
Educators enrolled in the state-approved course, MLE 505: SEI Language, Literacy, and Content, will develop and apply knowledge of second language acquisition to effective instruction and assessment for English language learners. The new course introduces design and classroom implementation of sheltered lessons that integrate content and academic language goals.
This course is open to core and non-core Licensed educators in public, private, and parochial settings who are NOT currently enrolled in a Wheelock licensure program. (Students enrolled in Wheelock education degree programs already have the SEI coursework included in their curriculum.)
"This is a great opportunity for licensed teachers in Massachusetts to obtain their required SEI endorsement by taking just one course, and receive 4 graduate level course credits," said Ryan Lovell, Wheelock College Educator Preparation Licensure Officer. "Completion of this course leads directly to the Sheltered English Language endorsement for teachers who have not had the opportunity to take the course through their districts. Teachers today need to understand how to serve an increasing number of linguistically diverse children and families."
Educators enrolled in MLE 505 will gain experience in differentiating instruction for ELLs at a range of proficiency levels and develop strategies for advancing reading and writing skills of ELLs. The course includes 13 face-to-face class sessions and an online component.
MLE 505 leads to the Massachusetts Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement for licensed teachers.
