Mattahunt Day at Wheelock
May 03, 2017
More than 50 fifth-graders and their teachers from the Mattahunt Elementary School were on Wheelock's Boston campus April 13, 2017, for a college and career awareness experience.
The students talked with President David Chard about attending college, toured the campus, listened to a panel of Wheelock students talk about college life, ate in the dining hall, and created a beautiful mural.
The mural will hang in the Wheelock College library in honor of the Mattahunt-Wheelock Partnership, which ran from 2010-2016.
Mattapan's Mattahunt Community Center (MCC), a longtime fixture of the community highly valued by residents, was consolidated in 2010 because of severe city budget constraints. Wheelock College answered Former Mayor Menino's call for assistance in sustaining programs and services in the neighborhood by forging a public-private partnership with the City of Boston, (BPS), and Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) to revive the MCC.
At the Mattahunt Day event, each Mattahunt student received a Wheelock bag with a number of items, including a book donated by our community. Our goal was to collect 60 books from Wheelock faculty, staff, and students. We ended up with over 210 donated books, all of which will be donated to the Mattahunt Community Center.
