2016 Spring Alumni Symposium
The Alumni Association Board hosted the Spring Alumni Symposium on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Wheelock's Brookline Campus (43 Hawes Street, Brookline, MA). More than 80 alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends joined us for an exciting and thought-provoking day of professional development and networking.
The Alumni Association Board was pleased to present the 2016 Elizabeth Palmer Peabody Award to Mary Naumec '99MS for her inspiring work as Director of Hospital Outreach for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.

An interactive workshop on the neuroscience of the brain/body connection from infancy to adulthood. We focused on the impact of tummy time, handling practices, and developing secure attachment to raise children who are connected emotionally, physically, and cognitively.
Making Linked In Work for You

In this hands-on workshop, participants learned to build or enhance their LinkedIn profile while learning how to develop and engage with a network on the platform. The session looked at interacting within groups (including Wheelock's Alumni Group) and how to post relevant content.
The Good Grief Project: Helping Children Cope in a Stressful World

By examining the meaning of grief, and discussing the ways in which children experience grief, we examined tools and techniques to help children cope with their loss but also facilitate opportunities for parents and classroom teachers to lead them to the goal of gaining a sense of control, hope and resiliency.

Breaking the Toxic "Blame/Grievance/Rejection Cycle" of Race Dialogues
William "Smitty" Smith, Founding Executive Director, National Center for Race Amity, Wheelock CollegeMost dialogues on race are caught in the blame/grievance/rejection cycle which becomes toxic and unproductive in having a lasting positive impact on bridging the racial divide. This session introduced the thesis of The Other Tradition in race relations, which has been a parallel, moral, counterweight to the tradition of racism since the inception of our nation. The session shared a specific approach to dialogues on race, a board game, Breaking It Down Towards E Pluribus UnumTM . This dialogue tool is lay centered, can be engaged across the age spectrum, and does not require "expert facilitators". A short excerpt from the upcoming public television documentary, An American Story: Race Amity and The Other Tradition launched the presentation.
