Educational Studies Program Overview

The flexible Educational Studies program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a master's degree in education, but are not interested in obtaining licensure as a teacher at this time. Students work with an academic advisor to design a course of study that draws from graduate programs across the college. Current students have chosen to focus on work with English Language learners or students with special needs, leadership and policy, or understanding autism.

Students may also choose from several specially focused Master of Science in Educational Studies programs that enable you to:

M.S. in Educational Studies

The self-design feature of the Educational Studies Master's provides unique opportunities to pursue personal and professional goals. The selection of one or more focus areas provides access to courses from a variety of graduate programs, such as Readin, ELL, Early Childhood, Child Life, Social Work, and Nonprofit Leadership.

In this non-licensure program, you will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty to design your own course of study. All students complete core courses in human development, research methods, and multiculturalism, in addition to a capstone experience at the end of the program. The Educational Studies program places special emphasis on scholarship, and field experience is optional.

The program includes 17 credits of elective courses, which allows you to select from a wide variety of courses, based on your interests. Students who already have an initial educator licensure may be able to advance it to professional status by using their elective credits in this program to complete one of Wheelock's 12-credit graduate certificate programs (Special Education, Teaching Reading, Teaching ESL/ELL, Teaching Elementary Math, and Teaching Elementary Science).

The Educational Studies program consists of a minimum of 30 credits and may be completed in as few as 12 months of full-time enrollment. Students may also choose to complete it on a part-time basis. Graduate Admissions counselors can help you explore the many options ( or 617-879-1114).

Online Master's in Educational Studies: Achieving Excellence in Teaching Math and Science (STEM)

Teaching STEMThis completely online degree program offers an approach to teaching STEM subjects that emphasizes not only the teaching of science and math, but how children's cognitive development and their racial and cultural identities affect learning. The program also stresses the relationship between you, as a teacher-practitioner, and how research-yours and that of others-informs practice.

This 30-credit degree program offers elementary school teachers the opportunity to pursue an advanced degree in STEM education while teaching. Courses are offered online with no requirement to travel to campus, enabling teachers to continue their education at a place and time convenient for them.

Students have an opportunity to complete a Graduate Certificate in Teaching Math and/or a Graduate Certificate in Teaching Science (4 courses each) that can later be applied to the master's degree program
