Students will engage in either one or two social work field placements during their time at Wheelock College, depending on their program level. General guidelines for the placement process, which includes completion and submission of a written application and updated resume to the Social Work Field Education Office, are found below.

Social Work Field Education at Wheelock

Field Education Guidelines for BSW Students

  • Field placement days are typically Monday and Wednesday. In collaboration with the student, the Field Instructor and Faculty Field Liaison, these days can be modified.
  • Required to be in the field 16 hours per week.
  • Receive a minimum of one hour of supervision per week provided by an MSW who has at least two years of post-graduate experience and is licensed at the LCSW or LICSW level. Additional supervision and support can be provided by a non-MSW.
  • Required to complete a minimum of 200 hours in field per semester, for a total of 400 for the academic year.

Field Education Guidelines for MSW Foundation Year Students

  • Required to be in the field 16 hours per week. Days are not predetermined; the schedule is a collaborative effort between the student and the Field Instructor.
  • Receive a minimum of one hour of supervision per week provided by an MSW who has at least 2 years of post-graduate experience. Additional supervision and support can be provided by a non-MSW.
  • Required to complete a minimum of 240 hours per semester, for a total of 480 hours for the academic year.
  • Required of full-time students only; students on part-time program plans enter Foundation Year field in their second year of the program.

Field Education Guidelines for MSW Concentration Year Students

  • Required to be in the field 24 hours per week (16 hours in the Worcester program). Days are not predetermined; the schedule is a collaborative effort between the student and the Field Instructor.
  • Receive a minimum of one hour of supervision per week provided by an MSW who has at least two years of post-graduate experience and is licensed at the LCSW or LICSW level. Additional supervision and support can be provided by a non-MSW.
  • Required to complete a minimum of 360 hours per semester, for a total of 720 hours for the academic year.

Field Education Guidelines for Advanced Standing MSW Students

  • Required to be in the field 24 hours per week (16 hours in the Worcester program). Days are not predetermined; the schedule is a collaborative effort between the student and the Field Instructor.
  • Receive a minimum of one hour of supervision per week provided by an MSW who has at least two years of post-graduate experience and is licensed at the LCSW or LICSW level. Additional supervision and support can be provided by a non-MSW.
  • Required to complete 820 hours for the academic year; 100 of these hours are typically during the summer. Along with the additional 100 hours in the field, students participate in a six week summer Gateway Program.
