"Just Mercy" Chosen as 2017 Community Read
May 03, 2017
Wheelock College has chosen Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson as its 2017 Community Read.
This autobiographical book is an account of Stevenson's work as a novice lawyer entering into the criminal justice system and his lifelong dedication to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment through the Equal Justice Initiative.
Just Mercy chronicles the case of Walter McMillian, a young man sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he did not commit, along with other individual stories that highlight the need for mercy and justice. The book brings to light issues of mass incarceration and institutional injustice through various lenses, including gender, race, and class.
All incoming Wheelock students, along with faculty and staff, will read the book over the summer and will discuss its themes in small groups during Fall Orientation.
