Please join us on the campus of Wheelock College for a series of lectures and workshops designed to increase the skills of practitioners working with urban families. All afternoon lectures are free and open to the community.
The
series will kickoff on October 15, 2008 with “Ka
Ab Ba: Building The Lighted Temple,” an Afro-centric treatment
model for psychological, spiritual, and character development pioneered
by Dr.
Terri Nelson.
This lecture and workshop will teach the application and practice
of ancient African wisdom in modern daily living. We will explore
African-centered language, constructs, and history and how those concepts
intersect with consciousness, human development, and behavior. This model
is based on works authored by Dr. Nelson, including “Ka
Ab Ba: Building the Lighted Temple” and “Secrets
of Race & Consciousness:
Revealed in Ka Ab Ba (Kabala) The Tree Of Life.” Valina Jackson MA,
LMHC, Director of Clinical and Program Services at Brookview House will introduce
Dr. Nelson.
Clinicians, teachers, and practitioners will learn how to engage all of their clients, students, or patients in a healing process that is reflective and inclusive of their own cultural heritage. On October 16, 2008, Deborah Hughes M. Ed. will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Nelson will return and provide a more comprehensive workshop. Victor Rodney, M. Ed., and Yvonne Desmond LCSW, LADCI will lead a panel discussion.
In November we continue our series with “Culturally Competent Models” a lecture and workshop presentation by Larry Higginbottom, founder and owner of the Osiris Group. We will also have a workshop “La Cultura Cura/Culture Heals: Using a Cultural Strengths Approach with Latino Men” lead by Fernando Mederos, Ed. D.
