Keynote Speech
In an animated and inspiring presentation, Archbishop Desmond Tutu emphasized the great potential young people have to foment social change. He told the students, “God has almost always chosen to use young people as some of God’s best partners.” Tutu cited the protests of American college students during South Africa’s struggle for equality: “Young people in this country did an incredible thing…and young people, you can do that. They changed the moral climate in this country.”
He recognized the conviction and passion of the Wheelock’s mission: “You, you young ones, who have come here because you are so desperately concerned...about some of the awful things in your communities.”
In an empowering gesture, the spry 76-year-old closed his speech by repeatedly pointing to individuals in the audience saying, “You can do it; you can do some extraordinary things.”
