International Service Learning Trips

2007-2008

Wheelock is proud to again offer opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in an international service learning trip.   Past trips to Guatemala, Northern Ireland, Singapore, and Ghana/Benin have been wildly popular.  Students have returned from the trips inspired and excited about the integration of learning and service.

Helping Children Living in Communities Affected by Violence Heal: Lessons from Northern Ireland

Belfast, Northern Ireland: April 18-27, 2008

This program, now in its third year, allows students and alumni the unique opportunity to experience the healing process that is currently underway in Northern Ireland after decades of sectarian fighting. Participants will explore what this process can teach us about helping children living in communities affected by conflict around the world. Up to 20 juniors, seniors, graduate students, and alumni will travel to Belfast and study the exemplary reconciliation efforts in early childhood settings. Participants will also engage in cultural activities and explore the beautiful Northern Ireland landscape.

Wheelock College and Colleges of the Fenway students interested in participating in this program must be admitted, register in the Spring 2008 semester for the corresponding 2-credit course, EDU 260 or EDU 850, and attend all preliminary sessions.

African History, Culture, and Spirituality: The Republics of Benin and Ghana

Benin and Ghana, West Africa, June 4– June 18, 2008

This program brings up to 16 students to two West African nations to acquire a greater understanding of African history and culture and the key role of Africans in the development of world civilizations. Students will be able to study and experience the richness and diversity of Benin and Ghana while expanding their intercultural, communication, critical thinking, and research skills.

Students will participate in service learning by teaching English literacy lessons at Les Vaillants School in Benin and working with children at the First Lady’s “Mother and Child Center” in Amasaman, Ghana.

Wheelock College and Colleges of the Fenway students interested in participating in this program must submit an application, be admitted, register in the Spring 2008 semester for the corresponding 4-credit course, AST 260, and attend all preliminary sessions.
