Introduction

The Wheelock College Student Health Service (WCSHS) is operated in conjunction with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) just a short walk from the campus. WCSHS is available, free of charge, to all Wheelock undergraduates (regardless of residency) and all resident graduate students. (All contact information can be found on the Wheelock Wellness Quick reference page. Non-resident graduate students are not eligible for care through this service, though they may subscribe to Wheelock Health Insurance (the Consolidated Plan) and may establish health care at BIDMC by contacting Healthcare Associates, the adult primary care site at 617-667-9600.

The Wheelock College Student Health Service (WCSHS), located at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), provides routine primary care and gynecological services to Wheelock undergraduate and resident graduate students. Conveniently located at the corner of Brookline Avenue and Longwood Avenue in the Carl J. Shapiro Clinical Center, the BIDMC is a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, focusing on excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research.

Health Services

WCSHS Services are provided during the academic year at the BIDMC through: Healthcare Associates, a primary care practice, located on the sixth floor of the Shapiro Clinical Center.

Most routine primary and gynecological care is provided at no charge to undergraduate and resident graduate students during the academic school year. If emergency room or specialty care is needed, or if primary care services are needed during the summer, students must use secondary health insurance, whether purchased through the College or obtained through a parent’s policy. All undergraduate students enrolled for nine or more credit hours per semester are required to carry secondary medical insurance.

Medical Staff

The WCSHS Nurse Coordinator will coordinate care for Wheelock students by providing direct care of medical problems, telephone triage, referrals and follow-up. Board certified primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurses are also available to see students.

Access to Services

ROUTINE CARE:
Wheelock College students should call and schedule appointments for routine care through Healthcare Associates. Calling 617-667-0500 for appointments and with questions will facilitate more efficient care and in some instances, a student’s needs may be handled by telephone.

URGENT CARE:
Students with urgent problems during service hours may call Jan Woodruff, the WCSHS Nurse Coordinator, for assistance in making arrangements for a prompt care referral. For urgent care when the Program is not open, a triage nurse or the physician on-call is available by calling 617-667–0500. Please consult with Wheelock’s on-call Resident Assistant/Resident Director (X2151) through security personnel prior to calling the physician on-call.

EMERGENCY CARE:
In the event of a life threatening emergency or a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention, the on-call Resident Director or Security personnel will assist in transporting a student to the BIDMC Emergency Unit. Emergency treatment is covered under a student’s secondary health insurance policies.

Health Certificate and Immunizations

Massachusetts' State Law requires all students (barring religious belief or contraindication documented by a clinician) receive certain immunizations. Record of these immunizations is maintained by the College's Health Service Liaison, who is able to provide students with copies of this information on written request.

Wheelock College requires that all students have a completed Entrance Health Certificate on file with WCSHS. If a student does not have immunization data on file at Wheelock, the student will not be allowed to attend classes or receive credit for their practicum or placement. Health certificates are mailed to the student upon his/her acceptance and must be returned to the Health Services Liaison on Wheelock’s Campus (200 The Riverway, Boston, MA 02215), before the beginning of the first semester. Additional immunizations, other than those required for admission, needed for a practicum may be obtained through the WCSHS. Call (617) 667 – 0500 for details.
