Counseling Services

Individual Counseling: One of our primary goals is prevention, and in this endeavor we strive to assist students with their concerns before they may develop into more serious problems. The staff at the Counseling Center may be consulted for a wide variety of reasons. These include normative stresses such as relationship issues, sexuality and sexual orientation issues, adjustment to college, moving into more adult roles, etc., as well as issues such as grief and loss, depression and anxiety, body image and eating concerns, etc.

Groups and Workshops: Topics vary each year, but in the past have included loss and bereavement, as well as groups addressing loneliness, relationships, eating concerns and body image, and other issues. Watch for postings around campus, as well as announcements on e-mail and in campus publications.

Consultation: The Counseling Center staff consults to Residence Life staff, as well as to individuals who may have concerns about a student. We are also available to faculty and other groups on campus to discuss general issues pertaining to mental health and wellness.

Emergency Coverage: The Counseling Center provides 24 hour emergency coverage when the residence halls are open, to assist students in the event of a psychological crisis. To access the Counselor on-call, dial Wheelock Security at (617) 879-2151, and ask to have the on-call counselor paged. In the event of a mental health emergency which occurs when the residence halls are closed, dial 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Confidentiality: Meetings with counselors are confidential, within the limits of the law. These limits include cases of life-threatening emergencies, imminent danger to self or others, or current abuse of children or other dependents. Otherwise, no information is released outside of the counseling center without the explicit permission of the student.

Fees and Hours: All services are free of charge to currently enrolled Wheelock students. The Counseling Center is open Monday through Friday, and offers flexible appointment times throughout the day and some evenings.

Appointments: Meetings with counselors are by appointment only. To schedule a meeting, call (617) 879-2413.

Location: The Wheelock College Counseling Center is conveniently located on campus, in the basement of Riverway House, Rooms 13, 14 and 15.
