Wheelock College is committed to the on-going recovery in New Orleans and has actively participated in those efforts.  Last January and May, we sent a delegation of students to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity to assist with the rebuild of a women’s shelter and to work with area young children.

We have a gifted group of students who will return to New Orleans, alongside of many of our faculty and staff members and the President of Wheelock, in January 2008 and again in May.  We are not only interested in raising awareness of the needs of the residents of New Orleans; we are committed to being involved in efforts to watch New Orleans once again become a treasure of the Gulf Coast.

This year’s program will take place on Tuesday, January 15th and will commence with an assembly at 10:00 am in the Wheelock Family Theatre. A festive luncheon will follow, complete with New Orleans-inspired entertainment and flair!

Jed Horne

Jed Horne is the Metro editor at the New Orleans Times-Picayune. He's a veteran writer for magazines and alternative newsweeklies and was part of the team that won two Pulitzers for Hurricane Katrina coverage. His first book, Desire Street, was nominated for the 2006 Edgar Award for nonfiction crime writing. Horne's new book, Breach of Faith, chronicles the engineering and political failings behind the disaster and looks at efforts to rebuild the city. Breach of Faith is a required reading for Wheelock’s New Orleans service learning trip participants.
