Student Applicants Sought for Expanding Jumpstart Program
July 01, 2006The Jumpstart program at Wheelock will be growing from 45 Corps members this year to 80 Corps members next year! This expansion will result in a 50 percent increase of the children in our four Partner Preschools benefiting directly from one-to-one relationships with caring college students!
Jumpstart’s mission is to work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. To this end, we train and support college students to serve as part-time AmeriCorps members, working individually with young children to build skills crucial to school success. Jumpstart focuses on three program areas: building School Success for young children by fostering their early language and literacy, social and initiative skills; encouraging strong Family Involvement to help families support children’s learning; and training college students to be Future Teachers and leaders in early childhood education.
By becoming a Jumpstart Corps member, you have the unique opportunity to inspire young children to learn, serve in a local community, work on an AmeriCorps team, and build professional skills. You will join a network of Corps members serving young children in more than 57 communities nationwide.
All Corps members receive professional-caliber training to help them implement Jumpstart’s outcome-based program, promote children’s school success, and build family involvement. Corps members have the potential to earn a work-study stipend during their term of service, as well as an AmeriCorps education award from the Corporation for National and Community Service upon completion of the full service term. Jumpstart alumni are eligible to become full-time preschool teachers through the exclusive Pearson Teacher Fellowship program.
