Federal Legislation
Higher Education Amendments of 2007 (S. 1642)
College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2008 (H.R. 4137)
Amends the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA). Impacts the
higher education community in areas not limited to student financial assistance,
teacher development programs, reporting and oversight systems for endowments
and gifts.
Quality Child Care for America Act (S. 2187 and H. R. 3870)
Amends the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of
1990 to authorize appropriations for child care workforce development initiatives
through state and local governments.
Student Breakfast and Education Improvement Act of 2007 (S.2143 and H.R.3978)
Amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to provide local or state educational agencies with grants to establish or enhance the breakfast programs as schools where at least 65% of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price school lunches.Governor Patrick Releases Readiness Project Final Reports
On July 25, 2008, Governor Deval Patrick released Ready for 21st Century Success: The New Promise of Public Education. The report is based on the recommendations of the Commonwealth Readiness Project, a nine-month, state-wide effort co-chaired by Wheelock President Jackie Jenkins-Scott. Ready for 21st Century Success outlines the challenges and goals of our public education system and details an “action agenda for establishing universal excellence over the next decade.”
