Peer Tutoring Program
Information for Students
This page provides information to students about the Peer Tutoring Program and how to request a peer tutor.
General Overview
Peer tutors work one-on-one with their fellow students, offering academic support and expertise in an informal setting. Some tutors are generalists, focusing on broad skills (such as writing) or disciplines (such as social work), while others specialize in certain courses or groups of courses.
Tutors have been nominated by faculty members because of their performance in a course or subject area and because of their ability to work with other students.
Benefits of Working with a Tutor
For students struggling with their course work, peer tutors are an important resource because they
- Can offer individual help that is not possible in the classroom setting
- Possess subject proficiency and knowledge
- Can explain concepts in the students' own language
- Provide positive academic role models
- Serve as guides rather than authority figures
How to Request a Peer Tutor
A student interested in working with a peer tutor must fill out a Peer Tutor Request Form, available in the Learning Center. Once this form has been submitted to the OAAA, the student will receive the name and telephone number of an appropriate tutor. It is then the student's responsibility to contact the tutor and set up a mutually convenient time.
Peer tutors cannot enter into a tutoring relationship with a roommate or close friend.
