Peer Tutoring Program

Information for Faculty

This page provides information to faculty members about the Peer Tutoring Program, as well as how to nominate peer tutors or how to support the program in other ways.

General Overview

As you may know, the Peer Tutoring Program matches students requesting assistance with a course or subject with a qualified tutor. Peer tutors work one-on-one with their fellow students, offering academic support and expertise in an informal setting. Some tutors are generalists, focusing on broad skills (such as writing) or disciplines (such as social work), while others specialize in certain courses or groups of courses.

Nominating Peer Tutors

The Program depends upon faculty recommendations of students who would be good candidates for the peer tutoring positions. If you would like to nominate a student to tutor for a subject or course, please download the nomination form and send it to the Office of Academic Advising & Assistance via campus mail.

At the end of each semester all faculty members are asked to nominate any students who they feel have the academic skills, interpersonal strengths, and enthusiasm for learning required of a successful peer tutor. However, faculty members may nominate tutors at any point during the semester.

Please encourage all interested students to contact me for more information.  In order for students to be accepted as qualified tutors, they must participate in Tutor Training prior to beginning the tutorial sessions. Students will not be considered as tutors, nor will they be paid unless they attend Tutor Training.

Faculty may recommend specific tutors to their students; however, all requests must be processed through the OAAA.

Syllabi Statement

You are invited to include a statement about the Peer Tutoring Program in your syllabi. Below is an example of what you may include, if you wish:

Students may meet with me (the instructor) to discuss any problems or concerns. Peer tutoring may be available for students who need additional assistance. Please see me to inquire about this option.

Other Ways You Can Help

Please consider contributing to the Peer Tutoring Program and the Study Lounge's resources by donating your course materials, syllabi, extra desk copies of required textbooks, or handouts. These materials would be kept on file for our tutors' reference and would allow us to better assist your students.
