“I have always dreamed of making a difference in a child’s life.”
At Wheelock, passion is more than just a word-it's the driving force behind everything we do. Whether teaching a child to read, helping a family cope with illness, or rallying a community around an important cause, our students, faculty, and alumni live out our mission to make the world a better place, especially by improving the lives of children and families.
A Wheelock education will give you the knowledge and skills to reach your goals. And our community will inspire you to create positive change in your life and in the lives of others.
Ava Jennings '12 is an example of how powerful this transformation can be. Ava first came to Wheelock as a high school sophomore to participate in a summer program designed to encourage Boston people from Boston to consider an urban teaching career. Ava worked in an elementary classroom in the morning and took college-level classes in the afternoon.
The experience prompted Ava to choose Wheelock for her own undergraduate studies. Impressed by Ava's commitment and her work as an editor and peer leader for Teen Voices magazine (which closed in August 2012 after 24 years of publishing), Wheelock named her a Passion for Action Scholar.
Today, Ava is majoring in early childhood education and works in Wheelock's Jumpstart program, where she prepares young children for success in school by encouraging literacy and social and emotional readiness.
"Working with these children everyday and seeing them learn what you've worked to teach them-that's what gets me out of bed in the morning," Ava says.
Wheelock offers several programs, such as JumpStart and UpwardBound, designed to help Boston public school students succeed in school and to consider and prepare for college.
