Online STEM Education Courses
November 21, 2011
Wheelock College announced the launch of new online professional development courses in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. Part of Wheelock's STEM Teacher Enhancement Project (STEP) funded by NASA, these new online classes will give in-service elementary teachers the opportunity to improve their math and science knowledge and instruction methods, within a schedule that fits their busy lives.
In today's educational and professional worlds, STEM content, knowledge and skills are vital to success. While there is an urgent need for teachers at all grade levels to be proficient in STEM education, most efforts to improve science and math learning are only focused on middle school, secondary and post-secondary schooling. Wheelock's online courses will teach elementary educators (grades 1-6) how to bring science and math education to younger students who are often not the focus of STEM programs.
According to Wheelock College President Jackie Jenkins-Scott, "Wheelock is dedicated to increasing the number of skilled STEM educators in elementary school settings. Our new online courses offer working teachers a unique opportunity to enhance their math and science teaching skills, without disrupting their work life," she said.
Wheelock will offer a set of eight online courses focused on STEM education for teachers of elementary school students in grades 1-6. The first two courses offered will be Numbers and Operations and Teaching and Learning Elementary Science. Designed by Wheelock faculty and expert consultants, these courses strengthen both teaching methods in math and science and science and math knowledge.
Wheelock's online courses are designed to fit into the busy schedules of working teachers. Each three-credit, graduate-level class offers a balance of content knowledge, teaching theory, and practical applications of classroom skills. All STEP classes are offered on a flexible schedule. During the eight-week course cycle, students can complete weekly assignments at the learning pace that works best for them.
