Nobel Peace Prize Winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu will be in Boston on October 29 as the keynote speaker for a youth symposium hosted and organized by Wheelock College. Three hundred and fifty students from Boston middle and high schools are expected to attend “Bridges to Hope and Understanding: Exploring Truth and Reconciliation: A Conversation with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and The Youth of Boston.”

On September 25, 2007, Stonewall Communities, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is to build community among older LGBT people, launches the second semester of the nation’s first lifelong learning institute designed for and by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adults ages 50 and over, at Wheelock College.

Jumpstart Boston at Wheelock College celebrates Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, a national campaign to engage hundreds of thousands of children and adults in breaking the world record for the most children reading the same book on the same day.

America’s widening waistline has earned the “land of the free” an undesirable title: Fattest Nation on Earth. As widely reported in the media today, childhood obesity rates have spiked. On May 2, Wheelock College and the Women’s Sports Foundations will host “The Health of Our Children: Physical Education Summit,” to combat the problem and ensure a healthier future for today’s children.

The Reverend Gloria White-Hammond, M.D. will give Wheelock’s 119th Commencement Address on Friday, May 18 at 11 a.m. In addition to White-Hammond, Wheelock will confer the honorary degree Doctor of Education upon Hildred Simons ‘75MS and Hanley Denning ‘96MS (posthumously).

Wheelock College will co-sponsor the “Violence Transformed” exhibition that will be held April 23-27 at the Massachusetts State House. Select pieces from the photograph and digital art show, “Life Worth Remembering: Images from Four Street Memorials,” which originated at Wheelock, will be included.

A Northeastern University, Wheelock College, Suffolk University collaborative in partnership with Jumpstart’s Roxbury School Readiness for All Initiative, is one of three Massachusetts institutions chosen as a finalist for the state’s Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration. Jumpstart enlists and trains college students to be mentors to local preschoolers from low-income communities.

Hanley Denning (’96 MS), our beloved friend and alum, was killed in a car accident on Thursday, January 18 in Guatemala City. Join the Wheelock community as we come together to celebrate her life on Tuesday, January 30, at 3:30 p.m. in the Wheelock Family Theater. A reception will follow in the Alumni Room.

Jackie Jenkins-Scott, president of Wheelock College, was the keynote speaker for the BAEYC Conference for Directors and Administrators on January 26, 2007. Jenkins-Scott encouraged attendees to declare that they are leaders in keeping with the event’s theme, “Community Building in Early Childhood.” She acknowledged the progress made in Massachusetts and the fact that there is much more to do.
