Middle School Race Amity Theatre Project

The Middle School Race Amity Theatre Project (MSRATP) is designed to use theatre as an educational tool to help middle school students develop reasoning and analytical skills in making moral decisions with regard to racial equality and justice. MSRATP is creating a canon of one-act plays centering on everyday people who became moral leaders while engaged in race amity. MSRATP is committed to offering plays that are affordable to every school and district. Scripts come with a DVD of visual and audio support that help make production less costly and more facile. In 2011, NCRA premiered “Xernona and the Grand Dragon X” by Jacqui Parker, the story of the surprising friendship between civil rights leader Xernona Clayton and Calvin Craig, former Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan. The production rights are now available to schools and organizations.

This will be in addition to the spring matinee field trips at the new Kroc Theater in Boston. Xernona and the Grand Dragon X is an original one act play commissioned by NCRA and developed in collaboration with playwright Jacqui Parker. The play is the improbable real life story of the surprising friendship between Xernona Clayton, a civil rights leader working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Grand Dragon of the Georgia KKK. “This performance was a keen reminder of some real successes in the 1960s struggle for human rights…. and we learn how one person dedicated to a principle can be critical to change for racial justice. Young people will be inspired by the indomitable spirit of Xernona Clayton.”
