MattahuntAfter a lot of work and dedication, the Mattahunt Community Center in Mattapan has reopened its doors to the community.

The improved center, which has a new and improved gym along with a new computer room, running track, and improved community room, has resulted from teamwork the last several years between Wheelock College, the city, and local organizations.

"This is a great opportunity for us to make our assets as a college available to the community," said Dr. Adrian Haugabrook, vice president of enrollment management and student success at Wheelock.

Along with the celebration, local groups where invited to attend and let residents know what their group can do for the community.

"We are some of the sickest people in the city, so it's important people know there are healthy food and living options right in their neighborhood," said Cassandra Cato-Louis of the Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition.

Others such as Alaian Farabaught, of the Jewish Vocational Service, were there to let residents know about the language programs for non-native English speakers, some of them are offered right out of Mattahunt.

"If people need English to achieve their goals we are here to help," said Farabaught.

Along with residents, local politicians made a stop by the center to take a look at the improvements and remember their time spent in the area.

"It's been great for the community and it's good to see it back in place and improved," said state Representative Russell Holmes.

Holmes added that he's excited to see the center where he spent his youth playing basketball in the Boston Neighborhood Basketball League, reopening and providing the necessary services for the community.

"This has been a win-win, for the community and for the groups involved. I want to see more projects like this," said Holmes.

The center which is open Monday through Friday, has everything from a top-of-the-line gym to an aquatic center along with after school programs for all ages.

Residents looking for more information about the center or ways they can get their children involved in the work that is being done can find more information on the community's center's website.
