New location for curriculum materials

The Library’s collection of curriculum materials has several new homes. Juvenile magazines and videos as well as big books and study prints are now located in the conference room on floor 2M. Kits and textbooks are shelved in the main library space on floor 2, along with cassettes, CDs (music) and CD-ROMs (educational software). These items are for use with children as well as for study and research, and all may be borrowed by students for the regular 21-day loan period.

Come take a look, and as always, if you can't find what you're looking for, ask a staff member -- we love to help!

Virtual Reference: New electronic reference books on U.S. immigration, children's health, and crime in America

As part of its growing Virtual Reference collection, the Library has recently acquired 3 new online reference titles:

  • U.S. Immigration and Migration Reference Library

Chronicles and interprets the phenomenal waves of immigration to the United States from the earliest times up to the present day, when restrictive policies have temporarily stanched the flow of immigrants. Covers the economic, religious, and political forces that compelled people to seek a better life in a new land; profiles both prominent and lesser-known people of the immigrant experience; and features key documents related to the topic.

  • Gale Encyclopedia of Children's Health: Infancy Through Adolescence

The set, which covers every major body system, is arranged into five main entry types: Diseases and Disorders; Development; Immunizations; Drugs; and Procedures. With a distinct emphasis on the health issues affecting children under the age of four, the Gale Encyclopedia of Children's Health provides a much-needed service to new parents and promises to be a frequently used resource in any library.

  • Crime and Punishment in America Reference Library

Covering the evolution of the American criminal justice system throughout history, Crime and Punishment in America Reference Library explores everything from juvenile justice to organized crime. Crime and Punishment in America: Almanac examines key topics, including moral and religious beliefs, economic implications of crime and punishment, penology and reform, changing attitudes towards violence, the death penalty and more. Crime and Punishment in America: Biographies includes entries on important figures, such as Jane Addams, Allan Pinkerton, Clarence Darrow, Senator Estes Kefauver, and others. Crime and Punishment in America: Primary Sources includes many documents, from the Sherman Antitrust Law and the Harrison Narcotic Drug Act to Eleanor Roosevelt's letter against lynching and the Report on Lawlessness in Law Enforcement.

Each electronic book (eBook) is viewable online and searchable; you can also search multiple eBooks simultaneously. The eBooks have been linked to the FLO catalog, so they will be included in search results for similar materials.

These titles are significant additions to the Wheelock College Library collection, which will greatly enhance the community’s research options and support many curriculum areas of the College. The titles are in the areas of American Studies, Arts, Business, General Reference, Health/Child Life, Literature, Philosophy/Religion, Psychology/Human Development, Science, and Sociology/Anthropology. We hope you find them as valuable as we do, and we welcome your comments and feedback.

If you would like to learn more about how to use the library's new Virtual Reference titles, please contact the reference desk at x2222 or e-mail reference@wheelock.edu. We would also be happy to incorporate these resources into library instruction sessions.
