Jumpstart Boston At Wheelock College

Volunteer Events and Projects 2005-2006

Book Drive: Jumpstart at Wheelock College was proud to host a Book Drive to benefit our program partners in September 2005. The drive collected over 350 books that were then donated to families of our preschools! Thank you to our volunteer coordinators, Heather Burnside and Larrice Welcome, for planning this event!

Community Servings: Volunteers from Jumpstart and Wheelock's first-year class spent time in December volunteering at Community Servings, a local area soup kitchen in Roxbury, MA. Students we able to prepare food that was distributed in the Roxbury area! Thank you to everyone who attended!

Cradles to Crayons: On January 26, Corps members spent time at Cradles to Crayons preparing pre-packed clothing kits to be distributed to children and families. Cradles to Crayons is a Massachusetts-based service agency striving to meet the basic needs of at-risk children in the area. In 2004, Cradles to Crayons reached over 16,000 children. This volunteer project was organized by Wheelock's Volunteer Coordinators. Their efforts in this opportunity started in November when they began collecting over 200 items to donate to the organization! Jumpstart Boston at Wheelock is currently planning a follow up volunteer activity with Cradles to Crayons for April 2006!

Books on Tape: Over the course of several weeks in February and March thirty-three Wheelock faculty volunteers gave their time and voices to create audio recordings of children's books. The project was organized by Jumpstart's Volunteer Coordinators and the tapes will be used by second graders at the Trotter School in Roxbury as part of their regular reading curriculum. Thank you to all the generous volunteers!

Resource Creation Day: On April 19th, the Corps members held an afternoon of fun in the Wheelock College student center. All Wheelock College students, faculty, staff, and friends were invited to come and create educational resources to be used in Jumpstart classrooms. Creations included books, sock puppets, hats, felt boards, picture frames, and much more!

Wheelock College Kid’s Day: On May 7th, the annual Kid’s Day celebration was held on at Wheelock College on the Library Green. For the first time ever, Jumpstart participated in the event! This year’s theme was “A Pirate’s Life for Me” and Jumpstart volunteers read pirate themed books and made sock puppets with the children. The event was free to all children and families who came and a great time was had by all!
