and Director of the Center for International Education, Leadership,

care and educational issues throughout her career. An educator, author
and consultant, she worked with the Ministry of Community Development
in Singapore to educate Ministry staff on high-quality programs and
the design of environments for young children. She also worked in Singapore
as a consultant on the United Nations Development Program, a four-year

degree program in Singapore grew out of Dr. Bergstrom’s consulting
work for the Ministry. Now under Joan's direction, many of its alumni
assist in delivering the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education
program. She has served as the external evaluator of the Diploma program
since 1992.
In response to the tremendous worldwide
need for innovative and creative educational products for school-aged
children, Dr. Bergstrom founded Children’s Out-of-School Time,
Inc. (COST) to introduce school-age children to hobbies and interests
that have the potential to become lifelong pursuits. Joan has been
instrumental in the creative development and implementation of vacation
holiday, summer and after school programs. The Activities Club®,
a subsidiary of COST, was sold to Nobel Learning Inc. in 1999. The
Activities Club® provided manuals, program guides, theme guides,
audio visual programs and resource packages to after school care providers.
Currently COST is involved in a number of dependent care support projects
that are designed for Fortune 100 companies globally.
Dr. Bergstrom has also been a visiting
professor in Australia at the Brisbane College of Advanced Education
in Brisbane and the Sydney College of Advanced Education in Newtown.
Other innovative collaborations and consultation projects have taken
Dr. Bergstrom to South Africa, Italy, Denmark, Russia, Greece, Korea,
Germany, Sweden, Argentina, China and Thailand. Her many books include School’s
Out! (2 editions), All the Best Contests for Kids (5
editions) and The Best Summer Ever (3 editions). Joan was
honored with the Distinguished Service Award from Tufts University
