Students & Alumni -- On-Campus Recruiting Interview Tips
- Research the employer
before the interview. It is important to be able to discuss relevant
issues pertaining to the employer you are interviewing with. Through
research, you should be able to respond to questions like "Why do you want
to work for us?".
- Schedule a mock interview,
a simulated interview with a member of the career staff.
- Review sample
interview questions.
- Arrive at the Center
for Career Development approximately 10-15 minutes
prior to your interview appointment; we will tell you where to
go once you arrive in the Office.
- Wear appropriate interview
attire:
Women: A straight forward business suit or a professional blouse and slacks with a jacket; sensible shoes (no high heels); be moderate with make-up and perfume; simple jewelry; and well-groomed hair and fingernails (conservative colors).
Men: A clean, ironed, conservative shirt and polished shoes; a business suit is preferred or a long-sleeved shirt and tie with a tailored pair of slacks; clean shaven and well-groomed hair; and use cologne or after shave sparingly.
- Make eye contact.
- Greet the
recruiter with a firm handshake and smile.
- Show enthusiasm about the job.
- Listen to
the questions before responding.
- If you do not understand a question, it is appropriate
to ask the interviewer to repeat or rephrase the question.
- If you would like more time to contemplate the question,
it is appropriate to say "That's a good question. Do you mind if I
think about it and answer it later in the interview?"
- When it's your turn, ask
2 - 3 questions that you have prepared in advance.
- Avoid negative or closed
body language, e.g. folding your arms across your chest.
- Once you have completed your interview, it is your responsibility to send the interviewer a follow-up thank you letter within 24 hours.
