Presented by Tim King, Esq.
Urban Prep Academy for Young Men opened its doors in 2006 after four years of planning. Now, the school is poised to replicate its model in Chicago and beyond. This presentation will describe the history of starting this school that serves African-American males, how the school sustains its unique culture and curriculum, and the process for replicating Urban Prep’s success. Real life examples of the challenges facing Urban Prep both internally and externally will be presented and discussed. At the end of the session, participants will have a clear understanding of what Urban Prep is, the promising practices utilized to ensure academic and social-emotional growth of students, and the journey any group can take from idea to launch to replication.

Curt Green, M.Ed., MPA will present, “Community Partnerships that Work within a Single Gender Environment.” Establishing school partnerships aren’t just a good idea. School partnerships are essential to student and school success. The 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. and Boy Scouts of America, Atlanta Area Council have successfully partnered with the B.E.S.T. Academy of Atlanta Public Schools to address the vital needs of our young men. Our partnerships provide mentoring, rewards/recognitions, academic support, fitness/wellness activities and leadership training. Hear how you can establish the same type of partnerships within your community to have a positive impact on the lives.
Rita-Renée Hunter-Graham, Ed.S. will present, “Knock ‘Em Out The Box! Using Positive Hip Hop to Teach Poetry and the Elements of Storytelling, while Addressing Social, Cultural, and World Issues.” This high-energy, exciting and musically rich presentation will captivate and inspire educators as well as administrators to take differentiation to another plateau at their schools. This presentation uses a male-dominated, internationally-popular cultural phenomenon—hip hop—to help boys to find their own voices. Hunter-Graham will demonstrate the art of applying positive Old School and New School Hip Hop as tools to teach. This approach allows boys to express themselves within a given format and teaches them how to transfer the knowledge they presently have to the traditional or classical literature they will encounter as they progress academically.
Keeping Our Eyes on the Prize: Engaging Parents & Community Leaders around Improving Academic and Social Indicators
|
Free Lecture |
Day-Long workshop |
Presented by David Miller, M.Ed. and LaMarr Darnell Shields, M.Ed.
If parents, teachers, and other community stakeholders are to become partners in raising academically successful and socially productive African American male students, these groups must be able to talk with each other. Often parents and community leaders rarely have opportunities where they can speak openly with teachers and rarely do teachers have opportunities to openly talk with community leaders.
African-American males disproportionately are suspended and recommended for expulsion; often this is due to lack of a meaningful connection between home and school. Greater efforts are needed to improve relationships among parents as well as increasing community based support for programs and services targeted toward African-American male students. In this seminar we will present strategies to increase parental involvement as well as best practices to include the larger community in socializing African-American male students.
