A CoNtemplation of Educating Black Male Youth
For far too long too little has been done to ensure the life prospects of black male youth. According to a Schott Foundation report, of the black males who enter the ninth grade a dismal 42% complete high school. Add to that staggering figure the fact that although black males comprise only 17% of public school students, they represent a staggering 41% of special education placements. Black male youth continue to languish at the bottom rung of the academic achievement ladder.
The Delores Walker Johnson Center for Thoughtful Leadership at ATLAS Learning Communities and Wheelock College continue their response to this troubling situation by hosting a meeting of founders and principals of single-sex schools from across the country that successfully educate black male youth. At the gathering these 18 leaders will address the question
Is single-sex schooling a viable option for educating black male youth?
