What Is the What
Richard Williams, Director of First Year Experience

The true story of a man named Valentino Achak Deng, who was born and raised in a small village in the Sudan, and whose life was turned upside down at the age of 6 by civil war, the destruction of his village, and the deaths of family and friends. The novel follows Deng on his journey out of the Sudan, his life in a refugee camp, and to his eventual immigration to the United States, where his struggles continued. In this session, we will share insights and observations about the book and the issues it raises, as well as talk about the purpose and value of book discussions. We might even find an answer to the question, "What is the What?" *Participants of this workshop are strongly encouraged to read What Is the What before attending this session.

SO SEXY SO SOON: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids
Diane Levin
‘69MS, Ph.D., Professor of Early Childhood Education
Today's children are growing up in an environment saturated with images of sexual appearance and behavior that they cannot fully understand. From a very young age, it influences how they think about being male and female, their bodies, how they act and treat each other, and what they want to be, do, and wear. It can confuse children about the nature of relationships and promote precocious sexuality. Based on her book So Sexy So Soon (written with Jean Kilbourne), Diane Levin explores the current situation, how it is affecting children, and how we can work with children and families to promote healthy development in these times.
