Humanities Major
Exciting Curriculum
In the Humanities major at Wheelock College, students investigate questions about value, identity, and meaning; explore the changing roles of women, people of color, and working people in society; and experience multidisciplinary studies that encourage both scholarship and imagination. Drawing upon literature, history, and philosophy, students develop an appreciation for their own intellectual heritage and the cultural legacies of people different from themselves. The expanded understanding of the human experience gained from the humanities is both an introduction to lifelong learning and growth and an excellent foundation for professional careers in the human services.
Major Courses
All Humanities majors take interdisciplinary courses at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. Students also choose to focus on literature, history, or philosophy. Courses in the focus area include Epic Poetry, Shakespeare, The Sixties, World Religions, and Aesthetics. As a capstone experience, all students complete an advanced research seminar in their focus area.
Additional Degree Options
The Humanities major may be taken with or without a professional concentration. Students without concentrations complete an extra focus course at the intermediate or advanced level.
Students may also choose to complete a dual focus in which they expand their knowledge of the Humanities by taking an additional 16 credits in a second discipline.
Professional Advantages
- Excellent preparation for graduate school.
- Close mentoring relationship with faculty.
- Strong support for the improvement of writing and public speaking skills.
