Dr. Melissa Hanzsek-Brill's research and teaching focus is in Elementary School Mathematics. She has been teaching at St. Cloud State University in the Mathematics Department since the completion of her PhD in 1997.

She teaches both Mathematics and Mathematics Education courses within the department, and has been a pioneer in teaching courses online in the past two years. She also conducts professional development workshops for local K-12 teachers, has worked on numerous grants focused on improving mathematics learning for teachers and their students, and spends three to four hours weekly in local elementary schools working with teachers and students.

Currently, she is conducting a research project titled The Linguistic Structure of Number Names and Its Impact on Elementary Students' Number Sense: A Study of Native English Speakers in a Chinese Language Immersion Program.
