Master of Science in Integrated Elementary and Special Education (for Initial Licensure)
Office of Graduate Admissions
Every year, elementary schools include more children with special needs in mainstream classrooms, creating a more complex learning environment with more learning styles. There is a growing demand for teachers who can adapt to these changes and develop a cooperative and collaborative classroom environment.
The IESE: Integrated Graduate Program for Elementary & Special Needs Teachers
Wheelock's Integrated Elementary and Special Education (IESE) program prepares teachers for the new realities of the inclusive model. Our unique master's program leads to licensure in both:
• Elementary Education (grades 1 through 6), and
• Special Education (teacher of students with moderate disabilities, pre-K through grade 8).
IESE suits students from a range of professional and academic backgrounds, including recent liberal arts or education graduates, mid-career teaching professionals and those seeking a rewarding career change. You may complete the Master of Science Degree program in 14, 18, or 24 months.
A Broader View of Elementary & Special Education
Because education is essential for individual and societal advancement, we recognize our moral and legal obligations to address the needs of all learners. In IESE, you will develop a sophisticated understanding of education's role within social, political, economic and historical contexts.

An MS in Education Degree with Opportunities for Experiential Learning
Every IESE graduate student spends an entire academic year as a paid, full-time teaching intern at a partner public school. Working side by side with a licensed teacher, you will learn how to structure and organize learning experiences and foster a positive classroom environment. You will also gain valuable experience teaching academic content to both typically developing children and children with mild-to-moderate disabilities.
Teacher Education Programs Focusing on Urban Education
Our program focuses on the challenges of teaching in urban classroom environments. Most internship sites are in urban settings. Course offerings include Racial and Cultural Identities, Inclusive Education Curriculum, Understanding Reading Difficulties and Teaching Reading to English Language Learners (ELLs). The program fulfills the Massachusetts Category 4 requirement for teaching reading and writing to ELLs.
Elementary Education & Special Education Degree: A Truly Integrated Program
We view elementary education and special education as elements of a holistic approach to educating children. So we seamlessly integrate your courses and internships to instill the necessary knowledge, skills and dispositions for teaching students of all abilities and backgrounds.
Master of Science Degree that Sharpens Your Technical Skills
IESE will prepare you well to incorporate technology into your work. Throughout the program, you will use the TaskStream application to build an online portfolio documenting your progress in your courses and internship and demonstrating your ability to employ technology in the classroom.
