Wheelock College is proud to partner with the Boston Public Schools (BPS) and support the district's commitment to improve literacy instruction in multilingual urban schools. Through Wheelock's Reading Specialist Master's for BPS Teachers program, qualified BPS teachers can earn Massachusetts licensure as a reading specialist for grades k-12 in addition to gaining a unique combination of theory, knowledge, and practical classroom experience that will help them take the next step in their careers.

Wheelock will accept up to 20 BPS teachers each year into the program, which will focus on writing and oral language as well as reading. Students will be exposed to a wide range of language arts courses and in-depth courses in teaching reading. They will also learn about the role of social context in supporting individuals' acquisition of language and literacy. Participants have the option of taking two extra courses to prepare for English as a second language (ESL) licensure.

Reading Specialist programWheelock College is nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for the consistently high quality of all of its teacher-preparation programs. In addition, our Teacher of Reading program is nationally recognized by the International Literacy Association (ILA) .

Wheelock's Reading Specialist Master's for BPS Teachers program is a 34-credit course of study leading to Massachusetts licensure as a reading specialist. The program is also approved for professional licensure for early childhood, elementary, English as a Second Language or moderate disabilities teachers.

Students will enroll in the program half-time for two years, taking courses and field experiences in the late afternoons and on weekends. Students can also elect to take two extra courses to prepare for English as a second language (ESL) licensure. Wheelock programs of study are cohort learning experiences. Students begin and often complete their program together, developing strong bonds as professional, academic, and personal experiences are shared. Through collaborative work, strong support networks are built among cohort members, faculty, advisors, and staff lasting well beyond the academic program.

The next cohort of students begins classes in September. Students who choose to take an optional course to add an ESL graduate certificate can do so at the end of the program. BPS teachers can fulfill the program's field experience requirements in their current job.
