William Sharp was a high school social studies teacher before pursuing his graduate degrees in the mental health field. As a teacher he became interested in why some students learn and some did not. This interest in the individual's mind brought him to the study of psychology and eventually psychoanalysis.

In addition to Wheelock, he teaches at Northeastern University and the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. He is the director of the School-Based counseling program at the Boston Institute for Psychotherapy, which works with Boston area schools to provide individual and group counseling.
