Twakia Martin is a doctoral graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she was the coordinator of the Jeanne Chall Reading Laboratory. Her work focuses on achievement and motivation for adolescent readers and students with disabilities, as well as teacher preparation. Her doctoral thesis investigated whether the designation of "special education" has an influence on how Black males judge themselves as readers, and on their overall reading achievement.
She previously taught second and fourth grades in urban schools in Charlotte, NC, and Cambridge. She directs the Wheelock Literacy Laboratory at the Thomas Gardner Academy in Allston and teaches courses in reading methods and intervention.
