Cheryl Render Brown began her career as a preschool educator in a cooperative nursery program in Cambridge, MA, and later conceptualized and coordinated Early Childhood Special Education through the Early Years Program for the Middletown, CT, public school district, working with public, private, and parochial preschool programs, health service providers, and social service agencies to identify children from birth to school age. Additionally, she served as a consultant to Connecticut school districts in their efforts to promote inclusive programming for children with special needs.
In 1990, she returned to teach in an inclusive pre-kindergarten classroom at the Eliot Pearson Children's School at Tufts University, where she completed her graduate studies and taught courses in the Child Study Department.
In 1993, she joined the faculty at Wheelock College, where she has taught and supervised early childhood teachers and worked in teacher preparation programs. She has taught in off-campus programs in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, and in international programs in Bermuda, Taiwan, and Singapore). She has served as a Chairperson for Early Childhood multiple times, completed a semester as Interim Dean of Education, served on many Faculty and college-wide bodies including Faculty Senate, Promotion and Tenure committee, Sabbatical and Gordon Marshall Award committees, Institutional Diversity and Inclusion Council, Curriculum committee, Academic Council, Administrative, Staff and Faculty Search committees, Education and Graduate Chairs committees.
She is additionally active as a Co-Chair of the Baldwin Early Learning Academy Pilot School (Boston Public Schools), one of Wheelock College's partner schools; an emeritus member of the Community Health Center, Inc. in Connecticut and a current member of the John Coltrane Memorial Concert (JCMC) Board of Directors in Massachusetts.
