Dr. Shirley Malone-Fenner is the Dean of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Psychology and Human Development at Wheelock College. Prior to becoming Dean in 2004, she served for 10 years as director of Wheelock's Urban Teacher Program.
A clinical and developmental psychologist, Shirley focuses her research on urban education, racial identity development, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and psychological support for military families. She helped develop Wheelock's racial and cultural development course and has led professional development workshops on racial and cultural identity.
Before joining Wheelock, Shirley held several positions at Western Kentucky University, including psychology instructor, director of Scholastic Activities, and counselor learning specialist. Prior to that, she was a senior mental health specialist with the Barren River Mental Health Center.
She is the recipient of several awards, including the Gordon Marshall Research Award, The Black Excellence Award, and The Black Scholar's Award. She speaks and conducts workshops nationally and internationally on urban education, transformative leadership, curricula development, diversity, violence, and post-traumatic stress syndrome. She is also a certified facilitator with the Comer School Development program at the Yale Child Study Center. She holds a B.S. and M.P.S. from Western Kentucky University and an Ed.D. from Vanderbilt University.
