President's Message
Welcome to Wheelock College-where we are very excited to be celebrating our 125th year of improving the lives of children and families. This year will be filled with special anniversary events designed to highlight Wheelock's storied past, celebrate our important mission, and lay the groundwork for our ambitious future plans.
Our first anniversary-year event was Convocation, where the entire College gathered together to celebrate the start of the new academic year with an address by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton, authors of the best-selling book-and Wheelock summer reading assignment-Picking Cotton. Their story about justice gone horribly wrong and the power of forgiveness sparked spirited discussions across our tight-knit campus.
Our anniversary celebration events will also include educational seminars for students and alumni, special performances by the Wheelock Family Theatre, a Founder's Day celebration in honor of our beloved founder Lucy Wheelock, and special events at the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum and Fenway Park.
Perhaps the most ambitious event planned for our celebration year will be Wheelock's first-ever International Conference, which we will hold on our Boston campus from June 19-22, 2013. This amazing event will bring together national and international educators, practitioners, researchers, and policy leaders to participate in an international conference exploring pressing issues affecting children, youth, and families in education, health, and human rights across the globe. We hope you will join us!
We also have an important new building beginning to take shape on our Boston campus: the Center for Learning and Innovation, which broke ground just before the start of the new academic year. This striking three-story, glass-and-steel addition to the Activities East building will house a state-of-the-art resource center for those who work with children and families. Wheelock's current Resource Center has long been a cherished workspace for our students and the new design will preserve its welcoming atmosphere. However, the prominent new location and upgraded technology will raise the facility's profile and help the College make the Center's vast lending resources more readily available to the greater Boston community.
Since its founding 125 years ago, Wheelock has been a truly unique institution, full of people who are driven to make a difference in society. Visit our Video Gallery web page to meet some of our amazing students and faculty, learn about some of our programs, explore life in Boston, learn some Wheelock history, and much more.
Better still, visit our beautiful Boston and Brookline campuses to get a real feeling for what Wheelock is all about as we celebrate 125 years of inspiring a world of good. We hope to see you soon.
Sincerely,Jackie Jenkins-Scott
