As Dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Programs, Dr. Mitchell Sakofs oversees Wheelock's graduate and undergraduate programs in Education, Child Life, Family Studies, Juvenile Justice and Youth Advocacy, Leadership and Policy, and Social Work. The School is home to undergraduate and graduate students in degree, certificate, and professional programs seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge, advance careers, and make a difference in the lives of children and families.
In his former role as Dean of the School of Education and Professional Studies at Central Connecticut State University, Dr. Mitchell Sakofs provided leadership to more than 80 full time faculty and administrators in eight academic departments and three administrative offices. He established a unified strategic vision for the school, developed a broad array of student success initiatives, expanded international programming, and created an environment supportive of faculty scholarship. Dr. Sakofs also launched pioneering entrepreneurial programming, including new graduate programs responsive to community needs in education and in nursing.
His career experiences include appointments as Associate Professor and Director of Field Experiences at Eastern Connecticut State University, as a consultant for the Panasonic Foundation and the Connecticut Center for School Change, as the Director of Special Projects at the Outward Bound National Headquarters, and as a science teacher in New York State.
Dr. Sakofs holds a B.S. Ed in Nature Interpretation from the State University of New York, an M.S. Ed in Curriculum & Instruction from Northern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in Social and Multicultural Foundations of Education and Experiential Education from the University of Colorado-Boulder.
