Response and Rationale for Writing Subtest Sample Question #75

Answer: My doctor said that the disease was incurable, but Doctor O’Connor said that surgery might help.

Rationale: Titles like “doctor” are capitalized when they are used before proper names (like O’Connor, which of course must also be capitalized). However, it should not be capitalized when used as a common noun rather than as a title (as in “my doctor”).
