Response and Rationale for Writing Subtest Sample Question #70

Answer: Katherine Lee Bates wrote, “Oh beautiful, for spacious skies…America, America, God shed his grace on thee….”

Rationale: This sentence has several mistakes. The first is that the familiar quotation leaves out part of the stanza being quoted, and therefore it needs an ellipsis mark (…) to indicate the omission from the quotation. In addition, a concluding ellipsis mark should come at the end of the sentence because the quotation is not complete. In that case, the ellipsis (…) is followed by a period. Finally, the closing quotation mark is required at the end of the quotation.
