MASSACHUSETTS TESTS FOR EDUCATOR LICENSURE (MTEL)

Information, Interactive Practice Exercises, and Practice Tests 1
Objective: Identify an accurate outline or summary. The correct answer is (d). Choice (c) accurately summarizes the different sorts of occupations listed in the passage, but this is mostly irrelevant to the main point the passage is making. Choice (a) has an idea from each paragraph, but it fails to connect the ideas to one another, and also fails to subordinate some ideas to others in order to get a better sense of the whole. Choice (b) is closer. It correctly identifies the first main idea and the points which support it. Its second point, however, misstates the point of the passage, since the passage talks about Salem keeping its citizens rather than experiencing new people moving there. The third point in choice (b) is also too vague. Choice (d) better identifies all the different parts of the passage along with appropriate supporting points. The student might avoid choice (d) if she/he is unsure of the meaning of the vocabulary words estuaries (wide area where the river meets the sea) and ancillary (related). However, the words turn out to correctly specify the main ideas of the text.
