The mission of Wheelock College is to improve the lives of children and their families though intellectual work conducted in the arts and sciences, child life, education, and social work. We recognize that outstanding scholarship in each of these areas is a central means of advancing knowledge about the educational enterprise, and, more importantly, enhancing individuals’ quality of life. We believe communities, as well as scholarship, is best served by closely adhering to the highest standards of ethics in research. To this end, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Wheelock College is designed to protect the rights and welfare of human participants in approved research studies.

As an academic community, we recognize the need for clear standards and guidelines to ground scholarly inquiries. In this vein, all research conducted by faculty, staff, and student members of the Wheelock community must meet expectations and procedures set forth by federal bodies as well as relevant professional organizations. The Wheelock College Institutional Review Board Guidelines for Professional and Student Research contains directions for how groups and individuals may receive permission to conduct research through the College. We hope that the manual will serve as a useful guide for your research. Additional questions or concerns may be directed to Joan Johnson at the Center for Scholarship and Research by email at cfsr@wheelock.edu or by phone at 617-879-2347.
